With decades of experience as a practicing prosthodontist as well as teaching at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry, Dr. Scurria is a compassionate, skilled doctor whose work speaks for itself. However, let’s meet our doctors by shining a spotlight on Dr. Scurria and getting to know the man behind the impressive credentials and body of work. Below are his answers to a series of fun, personal questions.
Why Did You Get into Prosthodontics?
I did an advanced residency at a VA hospital after dental school and had tremendous experiences treating veterans who were in need of complex services. Additionally, the VA system was doing some of the earliest clinical trials for dental implants and the exposure to dental implant therapy was a catalyst to seek additional specialty training in prosthodontics.
What Is Your Favorite Case / Patient / Procedure You Worked On?
I am a denture doc at heart. I am happiest when helping patients who are suffering with bad teeth or an unattractive smile to make a successful transition to a new smile and a new life with a denture solution, with or without dental implants. Also, I enjoy puzzles, and the challenge of finding the right plan for a prosthodontic patient is why I come to work each day.
If You Were Not Doing This, What Would You Have Wanted to Do (Chef? Fire Fighter? Etc.)
Growing up, I thought I would be an architect…turns out I ended up doing bio-engineering instead of construction engineering.
Fun Facts
- I’ve run exactly ONE marathon. I’m glad I did it; it’s not going to happen again. It was the Marine Corps Marathon, and yes, I did beat Oprah’s time.
- I taught full-time at the UNC School of Dentistry, and just after getting promoted to Associate Professor with tenure, I resigned to take over Triangle Restoration Dentistry after the untimely passing of the previous prosthodontist owner. It’s not a fun fact, but definitely life-changing.
Additional Hobbies
I’m a reader of mostly non-fiction and, for someone who doesn’t like sand, is thinking hard about becoming a beach bum! I helped launch a local non-profit clinic, Local Start Dental, in downtown Durham in 2020, which is currently living in its mission to serve the underserved. I also started a digital denture-focused practice, NewStart Denture + Implant Partners, in Raleigh with a classmate of mine from dental school that serves the Wake County metro area with high quality, affordably priced dentures, implant snap dentures, and implant fixed bridges. Guess I have made dentistry my main hobby!
Favorite Place to Vacation
We are a National Parks family.
Family Life
Father of three, daughter 29, son 21, and daughter 18 (a Carolina grad, a Carolina student, and Carolina bound), and married to Amy, who works very hard to keep us all in line.
