Why Did You Get into Prosthodontics?
I grew up in the Philippines, where the majority of residents lack the fundamental necessities of shelter, food, and clothing, and have limited access to dental hygiene education and care. Many Filipinos suffered from tooth loss at a very early age—in their 20s. Prosthodontics provided me with the advanced knowledge and proficiency to restore lost dentition for patients of any age and dental condition.
What Is Your Favorite Case/Patient/Procedure You Worked On?
I enjoy any cases where I get to restore smiles and patients’ self-confidence, be it treating a single front tooth or a full mouth rehabilitation, as well as ones in which I can help a fearful patient accept improved oral health and the care we provide.
If You Were Not Doing This, What Would You Have Wanted to Do (Chef? Fire Fighter? Etc.)
I can imagine myself as a travel guide or a teacher. I love to interact and share my knowledge and life experiences with others, especially teens and young adults.
Fun Facts
- I’ve walked the last 100km of the “El Camino de Santiago” (The Way of St. James) on a pilgrimage in Spain.
- I used to have a proper British accent after living and attending four years of elementary school in London.
- I’ve danced on the same dance floor as the infamous Imelda Marcos and her dance partner George Hamilton did, way back in the 80s!!
Additional Hobbies
I’ve just started sup-yaking (kayaking on a stand-up paddle board) to cool off in this hot weather. I enjoy playing pickleball and hiking in the woods with my pup.
Favorite Place to Vacation
Anywhere there’s water!!! I especially enjoy the beach and, better still, an island—Bald Head Island locally, Hawaii, and the Philippines, of course. I enjoy going on pilgrimages with my church and visiting holy sites.
Family Life
It’s just me and my small pup, Simon, now that my two children, both graduates of NC State, have flown the nest. My daughter, age 24, is in Charlotte, and my son, age 22, is now in Wilmington. I enjoy visiting my sisters and mother in sunny California.
